Annual Meeting - February 13

The Scriptures present the qualifications for elders, and the Constitution of Grace Bible Church stipulates the process for adding and rotating elders on our Board of Elders. As you know, Grace Bible Church currently has four lay elders serving, in addition to our pastor. Three of these elders - Craig McGlassion, Bob McKee, and Rob Roelofs - are required to rotate off at this time.

A minimum of two elders need to be added at this year's Annual Meeting. Experienced elders, Wayne Sourbeck and Everett Sollars, have both agreed to return for another term.

In keeping with the Church Constitution, an excerpt of the document has been posted at the top of the steps (by the entrance to the auditorium) and on the Bulletin Board outside the pastor's office. This document summarizes The Qualifications of an Elder, The Size and Term of the Board of Elders, and the Election of Elders. Nominations for elder are open for the next three weeks. Please review this information.

God didn't promise
days without pain, laughter without sorrow,
sun without rain; but He did promise strength
for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way.

If God brings you to it,
He will bring you through it.

Charles Spurgeon

"Holy wonder will lead you to grateful worship and heartfelt thanksgiving. It will cause within you godly watchfulness; you will be afraid to sin against such a love as this. Feeling the presence of the mighty God in the gift of His dear Son, you will put off your shoes from your feet, because the place whereon you stand is holy ground. You will be moved at the same time to glorious hope. If Jesus has done such marvelous things on your behalf, you will feel that heaven itself is not too great for your expectation. Who can be astonished at anything, when he has once been astonished at the manger and the cross? What is there wonderful left after one has seen the Savior?"

Temptation to sin ... J.C. Ryle

"We are too apt to forget that temptation to sin will rarely present itself in its true colors. Never when we are tempted will we hear sin say to us, "I am your deadly enemy ... I want to ruin your life." That's not how it works. Sin, instead, comes to us like Judas with a kiss ... But we cannot alter its nature and character in the sight of God."

Prayers - Peter Marshall

"Help us to understand that the pilgrimage of this life is but an introduction, a preface, a training school for what is to come. Then shall we see all of life in its true perspective. Then shall we not fall in love with the things of time,, but come to love the things that endure. Then shall we be saved from the tyranny of possessions which we have no leisure to enjoy, of property whose care becomes a burden. Give us, we pray, the courage to simplify our lives."

Peter Marshall, 20th Century

Observance on the Sanctity of Human Life
With Lynn Bolton and Signs of Life
_ _ _ _ _

Sanctity of Human Life Sunday

Today is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. Yesterday was the 38th anniversary of the horrendous decision of the U.S. Supreme Court on January 22, 1973, in which women were legally allowed to have a child within them, aborted.

We at Grace Bible Church believe that life is a first principle. We believe that God is the Author of Life, and that to diminish human life, or to take it randomly, is a repudiation of His gift.

As a result of this conviction, we seek to diminish the number of abortions in the U.S.A., and in the world at large, by supporting pro-life candidates, by volunteering at and financially supporting pro-life pregnancy agencies and crisis pregnancy centers, and by praying for the end of abortion.

We recognize that among the victims of abortion are women who allowed an abortion in their life, and deeply regret it. It is our desire to support these dear women with love and prayer.

Welcome Daryl Ounanian
and Westside Christian Academy

Daryl and Paula Ounanian have been supported as missionaries by our church for many, many years. The focus of their outreach is through the Westside Christian Academy, located at 9540 Bramell, Detroit, MI 48239. This non-denominational school reaches into the heart of Detroit with a strong curriculum and a firm Christian perspective for life. We are delighted for them to be with us today. Please share with us in a special love offering for this ministry at the end of the service this morning.

Who Is Jesus?

The Messiah - The Prince of Peace - The Word made man - Savior and Lord - The King of Kings - The Lion of Judah - The Lamb of God

When Christians answer the question "Who is Jesus Christ?" they build their answer on the Bible - on things He said about Himself, on prophecies from the Old Testament that foretold His coming, and the doctrines laid out about Jesus Christ and His Church through the rest of the New Testament...The love that Jesus offers comes in the form of a "personal relationship" with Him. The gospel of Jesus is literally "good news," so enjoy exploring the miracle and wonder of what the God of all creation did for you through His Son....

Jesus Christ said He is the one and only way to God

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me" (John 14:6). It's also interesting to note that Jesus did not call himself the destination, but the way, indicating that while salvation is immediate for the confessed and forgiven sinner, our Christian walk is a journey."

Something to think about...

"We need never doubt the truth of God's presence with us.
Jesus Christ is Immanuel - a name that literally means
'God with us.' Christ's life, death, and resurrection
are the supreme evidence that God will go to any lengths -
even paying the ultimate cost of His only Son -
to dwell among His people.
God is truly with us ...
Wherever we are.
Whenever we feel abandoned or alone.
Whatever circumstances we are going through.
It is our privilege to be in relationship with God for eternity.
This is why He came to earth, and this is why He died.
May our lives be filled with Immanuel."

Chronicles of Narnia

We have been presenting insights on the third book in The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader continues to be available in theatres. The books are full of allusions to biblical truth, and worthy of consideration.

"When Eustace asks Edmund if he knows Aslan, Edmund's response is that Aslan knows him. Edmund knows who Aslan is; he states the truth affirmatively, giving Aslan's proper title and the most important fact about their relationship. But he hesitates to say he knows Aslan. Although Edmund recognizes Aslan and his actions, he also realizes that Aslan is awesome and wonderful - and not well understood. He is far beyond Edmund's ability to really comprehend him, to predict his thoughts, reasoning, or behavior.

"Likewise, many of us know Jesus as the Son of God, as the Savior of the world, and as our personal Savior. We are familiar with Christ's story and his words, and we can sense his presence. We may have become familiar with his voice, and are growing in our knowledge of him, but can we honestly say that we really know him? We are human and don't have the ability to comprehend the mysteries of our omnipotent God.

"Yet, he knows us. He has known us since before we were born, and he knows our past, present, and future. He has plans and purposes for us. He knows our every thought, move, and inclination. Though he knows our sin, our shame, and our stubbornness, he loves us. He created us, and is still in the process of forming us. Our part in the process is to receive with humility the grace and love that always motivate God to act."

(From The Soul of C.S. Lewis, by Wayne Martindale, Jerry Root, and Linda Washington, page 67)

"O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, and are intimately acquainted with all my ways." Psalm 139:1-3
