the W.O.C. is collecting funds to specifically relieve the material needs
of several families in our extended church congregation.

Please enclose your special benevolence gift in an envelope separate
from your regular giving, marked CHRISTMAS, and with your
identification so that it will be counted in your annual giving summary
for tax purposes.

Should you have any questions, please speak to Joel Ashby,
any other member of the World Outreach Committee, or Pastor Bill.
Thank you for helping us help others this Christmas.

Operation Christmas Child, 2009

Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes, 2009

Children from Kids for the Lord brought all the boxes upstairs
and placed them on the Communion Table.

After our morning service, Pastor Bill & our Kids for the Lord
gathered for a picture

Each person in attendance went to the front of the church
to hold a box as Pastor Bill prayed for these gifts to reach those in need.

After service, the boxes were delivered to the next destination point
in Dearborn, MI

We are grateful that we were able to build and
deliver 59 shoebox gifts.
Let's continue to pray that the Lord Jesus will use these gifts
to introduce children around the world to
His amazing love an salvation.

Our thanks to everyone who helped make this a success.

A Thanksgiving Prayer

Blessed Lord,
the only living and true God,
the Creator and Preserver of all things,
We live by you;
and our whole dependence is upon you,
for all the good that we either have or hope for.

We now desire to bless your name for those mercies,
which in so large a measure you have generously given us.
Worthy are you, O Lord our God,
to receive all honor and glory,
all thanks and praise, and love and obedience,
as in the courts of heaven,
so in all the assemblies of your servants upon earth;
for you are great, and you do wondrous things;
you are God alone.

You have looked favorably on your land,
and you have dealt graciously with us.
Instead of giving us over to all the calamities that we feared,
you have multiplied your mercies towards us,
for which we are now called to solemnize a day of thanksgiving.

How sweet and wonderful is it to recount all the instances of your
patience with us, and your blessings to us!

O what shall we render to the Lord for all his benefits!
O let not our hearts be stingy towards you,
whose hand has been so open and generous unto us.
But do enlarge these hearts of ours, and fill them with more love
and thankfulness to the gracious Giver of all our good things.

- Charles Simeon, 1850, adapted

Special Thanksgiving Service

Each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, we pass the wireless microphone
to give everyone an opportunity to give thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ
for what He has done in our lives this past year. Today is your day to minister!

There will be no "Kids for the Lord" Children Church Program today,
as this mornings Worship Service provides a great opportunity
for children to share in the service with their parents.

Today, we are also dedicating our Operation Christmas Shoeboxes.
Pray that the Lord places each gift in the hands of a
boy or girl who will gladly place their trust in the Savior.

Following the worship service, all are invited to go to lunch in Dearborn,
at Rio Wraps/Pizza Papalis, and then deliver our shoeboxes to the Collection Center.

Christmas Cards for Missionaries

Christian Missionaries and their families, especially those who serve in foreign lands, treasure contact with loved ones and friends back home. Messages of love and encouragement are particularly welcome during the Christmas season.

At Grace Bible Church, we support several missionaries. If you would like to send a Christmas card to these Christian workers and their families, their names and mission affiliation are listed below. Please bring your Christmas cards to the church and put them in the old-fashioned mail box outside the Pastor's office. Cards will be collected on Dec. 6 and mailed to each missionary in one bulk mailing by our World Outreach Committee.

Veterans Day, 2009

Veterans Day, 2009
We take this opportunity to thank the men in our
congregation who have served our country in the
United States Armed Forces:

Don Bolton

Tom Gabbert

Houston James

Clyde Moore

Tom Royal

and we share this special story from Tom Royal:

" As some of you know, I was with the 1st Marine Division in Korea in 1953-54. That was not a fun time, and after that I thought about it as something we had to do, me and thousands of other comrades in arms, and life goes on. In September of this year 2009, 55 years later, we were in Atlanta, Ga visiting our oldest son Rick & Family. Rick has a hobby that he sets up a Military display of 'Korea Remembered' at many city fairs and other functions around Atlanta. His friend Denver sets up a Military display of all 2nd World War. On that week end the city of Alpharetta, Ga had a city fair that was on acres of land, with every thing from arts and crafts to displays of History and the National Guard and U.S Army Display. We were there with Rick and his display, and many people came by to look and ask many questions. At this time an Oriental woman and her two daughters came by and she had to take pictures of her girls under the flags: USA and Korea. After that she asked who was there in Korea at that time. Rick said not me, but my Dad was. She came up to me, grabbed my hand and said thank you for being there during that time. She was from Seoul, Korea and wanted to have my picture taken with her daughters. This is from a woman in her 30's that was not even born then. I have 2nd and 3rd Generations thanking me for being there at that time. Her Parents and Grand Parents had to tell her about that time. This gave me a real jolt and then I knew it had been worth it all. She and her Family could live in a Free Country and she was thanking me for something I had done 55 yrs ago in their homeland. God Bless Her & Her Family and God Bless The USA. NOTE: This all happened at the same time our President was going around the World apologizing for how bad the USA was. He should meet this Mother and her Daughters. There is more to this story. If you care to read it e-mail me and I will send it to you. Have a great Veterans Day and say a prayer for all of our Defenders in Uniform. Have a good one. Tom"

Veterans Day, 2009

The History of Veterans Day

1918
World War I, then normally referred to simply as The Great War (no one could imagine any war being greater!), ended with the implementation of an armistice [temporary cessation of hostilities in this case until the final peace treaty, the infamous Treaty of Versailles, was signed in 1919] between the Allies and Germany at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of November, 1918.

1919
November 11: President Wilson proclaims the first Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations." The original concept for the celebration was for the suspension of business for a two minute period beginning at 11 A.M., with the day also marked by parades and public meetings.

1920
On the second anniversary of the armistice, France and the United Kingdom hold ceremonies honoring their unknown dead from the war. In America, at the suggestion of church groups, President Wilson names the Sunday nearest Armistice Day Sunday, on which should be held services in the interest of international peace.

1921
Congress passes legislation approving the establishment of a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. November 11 is chosen for the date of the ceremony. Accordingly on October 20, Congress declares November 11, 1921 a legal Federal holiday to honor all those who participated in the war. The ceremony was conducted with great success.

1926
Congress adopts a resolution directing the President to issue an annual proclamation calling on the observance of Armistice Day. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, most states establish November 11 as a legal holiday and at the Federal level, an annual proclamation is issued by the President.

1938
Congress passes legislation on May 13 making November 11 a legal Federal holiday, Armistice Day. The United States has no actual national holidays because the states retain the right to designate their own holidays. The Federal government can in fact only designate holidays for Federal employees and for the District of Columbia. But in practice the states almost always follow the Federal lead in designation of holidays.

1941- 1945
1950- 1953
World War II and the Korean War create millions of additional war veterans in addition to those of the First World War already honored by Armistice Day.

1954
On June 1, President Eisenhower signs legislation changing the name of the legal holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day.

1968
Congress passes the Monday Holiday Law which established the fourth Monday in October as the new date for the observance of Veteran's Day. The law is to take effect in 1971.

1971-1975
The Federal observance of Veterans Day is held on the fourth Monday of October. Initially all states follow suit except Mississippi and South Dakota. Other states changed their observances back to November 11 as follows: 1972- Louisiana and Wisconsin; 1974- Kentucky, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, South Carolina, West Virginia; 1975- California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, West Virginia, Wyoming.

1975
Legislation passed to return the Federal observance of Veteran's Day to November 11, based on popular support throughout the nation. Since the change to the fourth Monday in October, 46 states had either continued to commemorate November 11 or had reverted back to the original date based on popular sentiment. The law was to take effect in 1978.

1978
Veteran's Day observance reverts to November 11.

Sermon by Pastor Bill
"Come Before Winter"
II Timothy 4:21
....................

The sermon this morning is based on a sermon with the same title that was preached by Pastor Clarence Macartney in the early 1900's. While some of the message has been made more contemporary, the critical and urgent call for all of us to do spiritually what God calls us to do now, and much of the text of the sermon, is Macartney's. The truths he preached then and the call Pastor Macartney gave then, are perhaps even more urgent today ... we truly need to Come Before Winter.
To hear this message, go to http://www.gracebiblesouthgate.org/
and click on today's sermon title. You'll be grateful you did.
....................

Pastor Clarence Macartney, 1879 - 1957

Clarence Edward Noble Macartney was a prominent conservative Presbyterian pastor and author. Along with J. Gresham Machen, he was one of the main leaders of the conservatives during the Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America.

For example, in 1922, when the Christ-denying Harry Emerson Fosdick preached and distributed his famous sermon "Shall the Fundamentalists Win?" it was Macartney who responded with his message, "Shall Unbelief Win?"

Sermons that Pastor Macartney preached at the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh formed the basis of two of the books he later published: Things Most Surely Believed and What Jesus Really Taught. Macartney continued to preach his conservative message in sermons, which he disseminated in pamphlets and in over forty books.

"Here is Love"
by William Rees, 1802-1883

Here is love, vast as the ocean,
Lovingkindness as the flood,
When the Prince of Life, our Ransom,
Shed for us His precious blood.

Who His love will not remember?
Who can cease to sing His praise?
He can never be forgotten,
Throughout Heav’n’s eternal days.

On the mount of crucifixion,
Fountains opened deep and wide;
Through the floodgates of God’s mercy
Flowed a vast and gracious tide.

Grace and love, like mighty rivers,
Poured incessant from above
And Heav’n’s peace and perfect justice
Kissed a guilty world in love.
