Compassion - difficult to give away because it keeps coming back.

Sermon by Pastor Bill Connell:
"The Party Parables, Part 2 - The Indifferent Guests"
Luke 12:15-24
Our sermon today, found in Luke 14, comes from a collection of stories on a common theme that were taught by Jesus. Pastor Bill has titled this collection "The Party Parables".

Last week, we looked at the "Parable of the Arrogant Guest," also in Luke 14. That parable was essentially instruction from our Lord on the need to humble ourselves. Ultimately, everyone will be humbled. Either we choose to humble ourselves, and reap the benefits, or we will be humbled at some point against our will.

Today we are going to examine the "Parable of the Indifferent Guests." To listen to sermons on line, please go to our web site: http://www.gracebiblesouthgate.org/ and click on Recent Sermons.

Annual Business Meeting - Today
The Constitution of Grace Bible Church requires that the term of an elder be three years, and as a result, three of our elders are scheduled to step down this month: Wayne Sourbeck, Everett Sollars and Craig McGlassion.

However, to better serve the congregation, the elders believe one elders term should be extended one year. As a result, a ballot will be presented at today's meeting that will read: "In compliance with Article 7l02 in the Grace Bible Church Constitution, the elders are requesting that the term of Craig McGlassion be extended by one year. Do you support this request?" Church members present will be asked to vote YES or NO.

This year's meeting will once again include a meal. The church will be providing the main dish of broasted chicken and the beverages. We are asking that each family bring a generous portion (enough to feed 8-10) of your choice of 2 of the following sides: Pasta, Potato, Vegetable or Dessert. If you have questions, please see Everett & Jacque Sollars.

New Members Class

A membership class is being formed, to begin during the Sunday School hour on March 7. If you would like to find out more about what we believe and how our church functions, please contact Wayne Sourbeck or Pastor Bill as soon as possible so materials can be prepared for you in advance. Thank you!

A report on the Bible as seen through the eyes of a child ...

"In the beginning, which occurred near the start, there was nothing but God, darkness and some gas. The Bible says "The Lord thy God is one", but I think He must be a lot older than that. Anyway, God said "Give me a light!" and someone did. Then God made the world. He split the Adam and made Eve.
Adam and Eve were naked, but they weren't embarrassed because mirrors hadn't been invented yet."

Sermon by Pastor Bill Connell
"The Party Parables, Part 1"
Luke 14

Our sermon today, found in Luke 14, comes from a collection of stories that were taught by Jesus.

We have been looking at a number of Jesus' stories in the last few weeks, seeking instruction for our lives today. The themes we have considered so far are:

1. The Hidden Treasure - we should dedicate ourselves to the most important thing in life: the Gospel.
2. The Samaritan - we should serve the very ones in life who are most challenging to serve.
3. The Widow & Unjust Judge - we should persevere in prayer, despite all.
4. The Friend at Midnight - we should be shamefully bold in asking God for those things He places on our hearts.
5. The Pharisee & Tax Gatherer - we should humble ourselves before God in prayer

One of our senior saints, Mickie Davis, was received into glory on Friday, Jan. 29. Mickie had been a member of Grace Bible Church from the day it was founded, and was active for many years in many areas of church life. She was particularly fond of music, and sang in the choir for many years.

We will miss our sister until we see her again, even while we rejoice for her that she entered the joy of her Lord.

In Memory - Mickie Davis

Maude "Mickie" Davis
May 14, 1921 - January 29, 2010
Our beloved Sister in Christ is at Home with her Lord
Our condolences to her family. She was greatly loved & will be greatly missed.

"It Is Well With My Soul"

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Refrain:It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

But, Lord, ’tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord!
Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul!

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

Horatio G. Spafford, 1873

Devotional

Nothing between my soul and my Savior,
Naught of this world’s delusive dream;
I have renounced all sinful pleasure;
Jesus is mine, there’s nothing between.

Nothing between, like worldly pleasure;
Habits of life, though harmless they seem;
Must not my heart from Him ever sever;
He is my all, there’s nothing between

Nothing between, like pride or station;
Self or friends shall not intervene;
Though it may cost me much tribulation,
I am resolved, there’s nothing between.

Nothing between, e’en many hard trials,
Though the whole world against me convene;
Watching with prayer and much self denial,
I’ll triumph at last, there’s nothing between.
-Charles Albert Tindley-

EVERYONE INFLUENCES SOMEONE. Paul warned the Philippians about the enemies of the cross in Phil. 3:18. We influence others, but who influences you? Beware of the wrong crowd, worldly values, peer pressure that leads us away from the Lord. May NOTHING ever come between you and your Savior.

Prayer requests:
That we would all heed the counsel of Paul and safeguard our relationship with the Lord.
That we would apply that to our marriages as well. May two become one in all ways with nothing between.
That we would apply that to our immediate families - protect your children from ungodly influences.
That our children at college and at their employments would be able to discern good and bad influences. We are to be lights in the world to point others to Christ. Satan would like nothing more than to extinguish that light.

Paul takes this warning very serious - He gave it in Phil 3:2 and now again in Phil 3:18 & 19. THEY are the ENEMIES OF THE CROSS. Paul wept as he issued the warning. Please heed it for your own well being.
God bless.

Vaya con dios.

Repentance

"The weapon of repentance, through rejection of false beliefs and affirmation of godly truth, has changed thousands of lives. Repentance can liberate the mind and destroy speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God (2 Cor. 10:5). And it can help us discover the wondrous significance we have in Jesus Christ: We are deeply loved, completely forgiven, fully pleasing, totally acceptable, and complete in Him. Our journey is a joyous and challenging adventure with Christ".

Sermon by Pastor Bill Connell
"Tenacity in Prayer"
Luke 18:1-8
....................

Today is Sanctity of Life Sunday. It is the 37th anniversary of the horrendous and failed decision of the U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 22, 1973, in which women were legally allowed to have a child within them aborted.

We at Grace Bible Church believe that life is a first principle. We believe that God is the Author of life, and that to diminish human life, or to take it randomly, is a repudiation of His gift.

As a result of this conviction, we seek to diminish the number of abortions in the U.S.A., and in the world at large, by supporting pro-life political candidates, by supporting pro-life pregnancy agencies and crisis pregnancy centers, and by praying for the end of abortion.

We recognize that among the victims of abortion are women who allowed an abortion in their life, and deeply
regret it. These dear women are to be loved, supported, and prayed for.

Is it your habit to stop to render assistance to those in need? Or, do you make an assumption that the difficulties others are facing are deserved for some lack in their own life? Something to think about...

"The doctrine of the atonement is very simple. It just consists in the substitution of Christ in the place of the sinner; Christ being treated as if he were the sinner and then the transgressor being treated as if he were the righteous one. It is a change of persons; Christ becomes the sinner; He stands in the sinner's place, the sinner becomes righteous; he stands in Christ's place, and is numbered with the righteous ones. Christ has no sin of His own, but he takes human guilt and is punished for human folly. We have no righteousness of our own, but we take the Divine righteousness; we are rewarded for it and stand accepted before God as though that righteousness had been worked out by ourselves."

Something to think about....

"God cares most - not about making us comfortable - but about teaching us to hate our sins, grow up spiritually, and love Him. To do this, He gives us salvation's benefits only gradually, sometimes painfully gradually. In other words, He lets us continue to feel much of sin's sting while we're headed for heaven...where at last, every sorrow we taste will one day day prove to be the best possible thing that could have happened."

"If You Knew the Gift of God"

2009 Christmas Outreach Report
We are pleased to announce that your total giving toward the Christmas
Benevolence Offering was sufficient that we were able to bless
five families for Thanksgiving and five families for Christmas.
We praise God for His use of us in blessing others.

Happy New Year to All

May our prayer be that:
In our Home...
We encourage one another,
We build one another up,
We are at peace with each other,
We seek to do good,
We rejoice,
We give thanks,
We pray constantly,
In our Home.

If CHRISTmas had never come
there would be no hope for us!

Thoughts to meditate on ...
Hark the Herald Angels Sing
words by David Phelps

The sun went down like any other day.
But unaware, the world just slipped away.
It was a silent night to many, some heard
but didn't care.
Oh, but to those who had been waiting the
noise was everywhere.

Hark, the herald angels sing.
Glory, glory unto the newborn king ...

The melody was carried by the wind.
No need to fear, peace and goodwill to men.
It echoed off the mountains and filled the valleys low.
A good news celebration that everyone will know.

Hark, the herald angels sing.
Glory, glory unto the newborn king...

Spread the joy across the land.
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Come and worship and adore.
He will reign forevermore!

Mary, did you know?

Mary did you know that your baby boy
will one day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy
will save our sons and daughters?

Did you know that your baby boy
has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered,
will soon deliver you.

Mary did you know that your baby boy
will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy
will calm a storm with his hand?

Did you know that your baby boy
has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby,
you have kissed the face of God.

The blind will see, the deaf will hear
and the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak,
the praises of the Lamb.

Mary did you know that your baby boy
is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy
will one day rule the nations?

Did you know that your baby boy
is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding
is the great I Am.

Jesus
The Reason for the Season

"A Christmas Visit from the Old Shepherd"
What would it be like to have a visitor in church today, who has come
from the Judean hillsides the night of the birth of Jesus Christ?

What memories would this old shepherd have?
What lessons has he learned?
What message does he have for us today?

Merry Christmas

Although Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol' did not make a clear
presentation of the redeeming Gospel, it did a wonderful job in
demonstrating the depravity of man. Our favorite Christmas story,
in Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2, enlightens us to the redeeming work
of God in this dark world.

Merry Christmas. God bless us everyone!

2009 Christmas Outreach

Today is the last day the World Outreach Committee requests your
participation in the special 2009 Christmas outreach.

This year, in response to the difficulties many are facing,
the W.O.C. is collecting funds to specifically relieve the material needs
of several families in our extended church congregation.

Please enclose your special benevolence gift in an envelope separate
from your regular giving, marked CHRISTMAS, and with your
identification so that it will be counted in your annual giving summary
for tax purposes.

A Christmas Prayer by Robert Louis Stevenson
Loving Father,
help us remember the birth of Jesus
that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds,
and worship of the wise men.
May the Christmas morning make us happy
to be Thy children, and Christmas evening
bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake.
Amen.
